2 Corinthians 2:14-16

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life.

2 Corinthians 2:14-16
I pray they’ll smell you this weekend!!

Once again by using the New King James Version
you LOOSE the CRITICAL meaning of the word Savor,
    by using the word fragrance…
Frangrance is something to cover up something else,
or to enhance how something because it lacks something…
SO fragrance is the “wrong, wrong, wrong” word to use, in this verse… The appropriate translation of this word would be
a sweet smelling (savor)-or better word–(sacrifice) incense, cleansed, smoke, tested thru the fire ! ! !
    Look at Eph 5:2, Phil 4:18 and Exodus 29: 18 + 25
So by using the wrong word Fragrance, you loose all the salt
and TRUE meaning of what the verse actually means…
PLEASE STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL KING JAMES VERSION !
LESS CHANCE OF YOU CONFUSING OTHERS WITH A THIRST
    TO KNOW THE TRUTH !

  2. Pasta G Says:

    American Heritage Dictionary defines Fragrance:

    1. The state or quality of having a pleasant odor.
    2. A sweet or pleasant odor; a scent.
    3. A substance, such as a perfume or cologne, designed to emit a pleasant odor.

According to the Strongs Concordance (KJV based mind you):

Verse 14 “savour” = Greek word “Osme” - means literally and figuratively “fragrance”.

verse 15 “sweet savour” = single Greek word “Euodia” - means “good scentedness, that is, fragrance”.

Verse 16 both instances of “savour” are the same as in verse 14.

It would appear that the english word “fragrant” always has a positive, pleasant connotation and is essentially equal to the old english/british word “savour” and the biblical phrase “sweet savour”…

Ephesians 5:2 - “Osme” is used for “savour”…
Philippians 4:2 - “Osme” is used for “odour”…

  3. al Somebody Says:

As we know Greek words can have 2 to 3 or several meanings
in this case The Greek Work EUODIA translates into Fragrance
OSME Translates into “Odour” Which means the odor exists
from a refinning process that is to say the sacrifice of Jesus
giving up his life as an offering and sacrifice to GOD, so the
sacrifice iteslf created an odour, which was pleasing to GOD.
In other words Christ’s sacrifice replaced the old testament sacrifice of Bulls and rams for the atonement of sins, so “odor” is this result of purging, you do not get a fragrance when you burn a steak !
So we are not talking about sweet perfume fragrance here! We are talking about the results of a “great sacrifice” and the “odour” of this sacrifice was pleasing to God…
Research done thru George Lamsa, Hebrew-Greek Bible Spiros Zodhiates…Ancient Hebrew Text…
So in Conclusion there is a (Far Cry) of difference
between (odour) which is the accurate meaning and
Fragrance which is sweet smelling but
it is not the appropriate translation word from the original
    Hebrew Texts…
Please read Hebrews 10: v. 1 -10 we are talking about sacrifice (not ) perfume or fragrance…

    Thankyou and God Bless !

I wont go as far as to comb through your analysis and challenge your definitions - you see I’m actually stuck back on the fact that 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 says or implies nothing about sacrifice - regardless of whether I’m viewing it as KJV, NKJV, Greek or english… some of the other verses you cite for support of your point do, I’ll give you that, but I’m not seeing the point you are trying to make in regards to the text being discussed - except that you may be reading into it a meaning that is at least in part theologically sound in another context but is clearly not presented in this particular verse… Does not Paul present “the savour of His knowledge” and not “the savour of His sacrifice” as his subject here?

It might help your point if you quote your sources verbatum (as I did last post), namely your source for the definitions of “fragrance” and “odor”. Its hard to just take your word for it when all my language tools dont support what you are saying…

Actually I’d like to bow out of this conversation respectfully disagreeing at least for now. Gotta keep my mind and my time focused for Sunday morning!

    Blessings!

This will be the last post on this subject, but it is always a Blessing, to discuss and edifiy for the truth…
I was not debating savor, the only word that I was referring
to was (fragrance), it appears to be out of context…
you may respectfully disagree, but to me, knowing the
truth and knowing (nothing but the truth) is most important
to me… I am not trying to say you are wrong and I am Right. I am only trying to point out as a 30 year Christian who has researched the scriptures, that using the NKJV
sometimes the words used may not be appropriate to the
    TRUE meaning of the verse…
    Please read: 1Tim Chap 2 v 1-6 and 2Tim chap 3 v 14-17
So I leave you with 2 Tim chap 3 V16:
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
    instruction in righteousness:
So my goal here is not to reproof or correct, but to
    instruct in (righteousness )!
Thankyou for taking the time and thought to discuss
the Holy Sacred Scriptures with me…
    Many Blessings to you !
