1 Thessalonians 5:5-8

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Paul said to the Thessalonian Church:

“You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.”

Luke 2:29-32

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Simeon prayed when the baby Jesus was presented at the temple:

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,

According to Your word;

For my eyes have seen Your salvation

Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,

A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”

Luke 18:25-27

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Jesus said:

“For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

Isaiah 61:10-11

Friday, January 29th, 2010

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

2nd Corinthians 7:10-11

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Paul said to the church of Corinth:

…For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication!

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

VOTD Family,

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It is perhaps the last ‘pure’ American holiday. It doesn’t ever seem to be in danger of commercialization or exploitation though it is increasingly being encroached upon. This year I actually saw my first Christmas -umm excuse me “holiday” TV ad on Halloween, I heard the first Christmas song that same week, and it wasn’t long after when the holiday decorations began to go up!

What I love – and what “the world” cannot effectively kill is Thanksgiving’s family and fellowship-centric theme – it seems to foster this better than any other American holiday in my opinion. But even better than that is Thanksgiving’s strong theme of thankfulness – in particular thankfulness for what God provides and accomplishes in our lives.

And yes, we are thankful looking back, but also consider that as we look forward there is much to be thankful for – even looking forward a mere 29 days… obscured in a snow slide of commerce, Santa, wishful secular thinking, and other holidays that have been forced into the slavery of competition is the celebration of the greatest thing a human can be thankful for:

Paul told us that “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

John told us that “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (”payer of the price”) for our sins.” (1st John 4:9-10).

God loves us and has saved us.

And so for this reason and reason of His continued help and presence in our lives I’d like to offer a few Thanksgiving verses. Meditate on them. Recite them as you celebrate. There are many more – let this motivate you to seek them out!

May the blessing of thankfulness be upon you all!

Pastor George Hillman

~

“…in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

~

Oh, give thanks to the LORD!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!

Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!
Psalm 105:1-3

~

It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night…
PSALM 92:1-2

~

And of course the official verse for Thanksgiving:

“…And when you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, offer it of your own free will.

On the same day it shall be eaten; you shall leave none of it until morning…” Leviticus 22:29-30

This basically means don’t say “no thank you” to anything and don’t leave any leftovers! Its a commandment! :-)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Romans 13:11-14

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Psalm 27:1-3

David said:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell.

Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear;

Though war should rise against me, In this I will be confident.”

Romans 5:6-8

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
